Williard Joshua Jose from the Philippine Science High School in Diliman, Quezon City won the country's first gold medal at the 5th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) held last 5-14 September 2011 at Modena, Italy. Jose was also a silver medalist at the 7th International Junior Science Olympiad held last year in Nigeria.
Other medalist in the Olympiad includes the following:
Silver: 1) Christopher Jan Landicho - Philippine Science High School - Bicol Regional Campus
2) Charles Kevin Tiu - Saint Jude Catholic School Manila
Bronze: - John Allan Olesco - Aquinas University, Legaspi City
The participants were coached by Prof. Miguel Cano from Bicol University and Dr. Marietta De Leon of UP Diliman. Dr. Helen Caintic, current director of PSHS- Diliman served as observer.
