I'VE MADE IT

Well, the Australian Citizenship Test for me is over. I took it yesterday and passed, with 1 mistake out of 20 questions or 95%.The thing is the one that I answered incorrectly haunts me. I could make a 100%.

My advice to those who will sit the test, read the first 7 pages. 30% of the test will come from the priviliges, responsibilities and values of Australian citizenships. I cannot reveal you the questions. I have done my part of reading the book and I wish you do the same. Good Luck!

New Wii Games?

The hurling of shoes by one journalist at US president George W Bush can be an inspiration to Nintendo bosses by coming out with a Wii game by the same nature. Players hurl shoes at famous and infamous personalities with different shoe sizes.

Miss Russia is MISS WORLD 2008

(From Miss World website)
Russia is crowned Miss World. The eyes of the world were on one stage when Kseniya Sukhinovia from Russia was crowned Miss World in a glittering, star - studded ceremony at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg, the City of Gold. The 2008 Miss World Festival, a record breaking year in the number of contestants taking part, has seen 109 beautiful and talented contestants spend an unforgettable month in South Africa. However, there could only be one winner and the applause rang out in the packed Convention Centre as Julia Morley, Chairman of the Miss World Organisation and of the international panel of judges, announced the winner`s name. Kseniya Sukhoinova smile spoke a thousand words to a worldwide TV audience of over 2 billion as she was crowned by last year`s Miss World, Zilin Zhang. Trinidad and Tobago`s Gabrielle Walcott was second runner-up and India`s Parvathay Omanakuttan was first runner-up. The other two finalists were South Africa and Angola.

IT'S BEEN AWHILE

It's been a while since my last blog. Well, I just having my 3-month leave from my work in Saudi Arabia. I've been here in Sydney since 1st October 2008 but I don't have the time to sit on infront of the computer firstly because my son is using it and secondly the speed is so slow that I got bored waiting. It is much faster now after we updated it to a bigger data memory and a much higher subscription rate. I don't know if the service provider intentionally slows the transfer of data so that you got irritated and updated your account in the long run.

For the past months, I've been doing my cross stitch project, to kill the time, entitled "The Last Supper" by Leonardo Da Vinci. I started it on 5th October and finished 2 months after. I could not upload the pictures of it because I am only a guest to this computer and the administrator, my son Karlo, is already in the Philippines, with his mom, having their summer holiday. They will be back on the 1st of February 2009 while I will be returning to Jubail, Saudi Arabia on the 30th of December 2008 and will be arriving there on New Year's Eve.

I am alone in this unit, preparing for my Australian citizenship test tomorrow, 17 Dec 2008. I hope I pass that test. Fingers crossed.

OFF to RIYADH

After one month, I was able to get my new MRP (Machine Readable Passport) yesterday, 16 September 2008. But I had to travel from Jubail to Riyadh to get that passpport. I woke up at 3 AM and off to Dammam Bus Station at 4 AM with our Indian purchaser Roy. The ticket costs 92 Saudi Riyals back and forth. The bus left the station at 6: 30 AM and stopped at a gas station for us to relieve ourselves at 8:55 AM. The journey was too long and boring. All you see was a never-ending desert with occasional camels at the far distant. Only after 4 hours of travel did I see houses at Al Kharf at 10: 40 AM. I arrived in Riyadh Station at 11:20 AM.

A taxi took me to the Philippine Embassy at 11:50 AM for 50 Saudi Riyals. I spent only 15 minutes in the Emabassy to get my MRP. A filipino taxi driver took me back to the bus station for 50 Saudi Riyals. There I met a fellow Filipino from Leyte (whew, I forgot his name--actually I did not bother to ask his name). He is working as a crane operator for CCC at Khursaniyah, a 2 hours drive from Jubail. He became my talking companion when the bus left Riyadh at 1: 25 PM

The only consolation I got was that a food package was given to us by the bus driver after the end of the fasting hour. It contained dates, small butter cake, juice and a bottle of water. The bus arrived at around 6: 30 PM in Dammam. We waited another one hour to take us to Jubail. We were only 3 passengers in the bus which arrived in Jubail at 8: 45 PM. My butt and head was aching when I got home at 10: 30 PM

Whew, what a trip for an MRP!!!

Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2 Ends on Sunday

Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2 culminates at the Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, 14 September 2008. The six remaining finalists are Bugoy, Liezel, Laarni, Van, Miguel and Cris. As the previous year, the Grand Dreamer will be chosen through text votes - meaning the one who got the highest number of text votes win the contest.

There is something anomalous in this kind of voting. At the front, it seems to be a popularity contest. Reality-wise, it is a battle between a have and a have-not!

Williams, Federer Win US Open Title

American Serena Williams smashed second-seed Jelena Jankovic 6-4,7-5 to capture her 3rd US Open Title at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Serena also won the title in 1999 and 2002.

Meanwhile, Roger Federer slammed Andy Murray 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 to capture his 5th consecutive US Open title.

Losing Senators Gaining Positions

Fourth on the list of Senators who lost in last year 's Senatorial race and has been appointed by President Gloria M. Arroyo is Luis "Chavit" Singson. Chavit Singson who betrayed the then President Joseph Estrada over the jueteng payola is appointed as Deputy National Security Adviser. Malacanang denied that this is a political accommodation. But the Filipinos cannot be wrong.

They say that Chavit Singson is qualified for the job since he once worked as Chief of Police of his domain.
Other senators who lost in the election and have been appointed as government officials are:
1. Prospero Pichay Jr - Member of the Board, Local Waterworks & Utilities Administration
2. Vicente Sotto III - Chairman of the Dangerous Drugs Board
3. Ralph Recto - Director-General of National Economic & Development Authority (NEDA)
Coming soon is Tessie Aquino-Oreta!!

GANG RAPE of PINAY TEENS

It is a common occurence nowadays watching news from TFC that filipinas are being raped by their barkadas and acquantances. Sad to say, the rape happened while the teens are drunk.

RAMADAN KARIM!

Muslims around the world are celebrating the Holy Month of Ramadan starting on the 1st of September 2008. During the month, they refrain from eating, smoking and sexual activity from the break of the dawn until sunset. Exempted are those who are children, sick, elderly, pregnant and nursing women. This is the occasion where Muslims fast and "feel" the hunger of poor people.

Christians do celebrate fasting during the Lenten Season. They also want to be "one" with those who are hungry in this world.

HAPPY GRANDPARENTS' DAY

Yesterday, 07 September 2009 the Filipinos celebrated Happy Grandparents' Day in honour of our "lolos" and "lolas". I do not know what year this occassion started. Still, it is great to remember and cherish the contributions our grandmother and grandfather provided us in shaping our beings.

On the same day, I received a greeting from my wife. It is Father's Day in Australia.

2008 Beijing Summer Olympics 2008 Closes

Michael Phelps
The 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics closes with superb pagentry on 24 August 2008. China, the host country, gathered the most gold medals while the United States raked in the most medals. Micahel Phelps of the US became the most bemedaled athlete winning 8 golds in the swimming competition. The top 10 countries with their gold-silver-bronze medals are:

1) United States -36-38-36
2) China-51-21-28
3) Russia-23-21-28
4) Britain-19-13-15
5) Australia-14-15-17
6) Germany -16-10-15
7) France -7-16-17
8) South Korea -13-10-8
9) Italy-8-10-10
10) Ukraine-7-5-15

Frustrating but expected, the Philippines did not get any medal. With little time for training and financial support from the government, a Filpino Olympian gold medalist is yet to come. Hopefully from billiard if it becomes an Olympic sport.

Erik Santos was supposed to sing at the closing ceremonies but since I was not able to see the event, I am not sure if he did perform or not. I wish I could hold on the recording of the opening as well as the closing ceremonies of the Game in the future.

Machine Readerable Passport - Part 2

On 14 August 2008, the "Embassy on Wheel" project of the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh extended its services in Jubail, Saudi Arabia at the Saudi Telecom Becah Camp. This was my second chance to renew my passport.

I arrived at the site at 6:05 AM but I was already No. 95 on the list. Unlike the Al Bustan Hotel chaotic situation 2 weeks ago, the atmosphere at STC Beach Camp was orderly. Those applying for renewal of passports were housed in an airconditioned function rooms with sofas.

Overall, the system was much better than what happened in Al Khobar. I was comfortable throughout the day although I spent 9 hours there. KUDOS to the volunteers who facilitated this service - the Filipino Community in Jubail and the World Sikaran, to name a few.

But I heard, this was not the situation the day after, 15 August 2008.

FIVE 8s for SUMMER OLYMPIC 2008

Five days ago, the 2008 Summer Olympic kicked off in Beijing, China at exactly 8:08 in the evening of 08 August 2008.

So far, I have not seen any olympic events on TV. I maybe one of the million OFWs who is very busy working that an event like this slips our busy days. This is also due to the fact that you cannot view these spectacular games for free.

I am only relying now on the news in the internet. I wish I could see the opening and closing ceremony on TV for free or on DVD for a price.
SANA....

Philippine All Stars - 2008 Hip-Hop Champs

The stars are shining on the Philippine All Stars by winning the 2008 World Hip-Hop Championship held in Las Vegas, Nevada on 3 August 2008.

Our hip-hop dancers bested over 1,000 dancers from 33 countries around the world.

Machine Readable Passport (MRP)

My passport will expire soon. It's a relief that the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh made an advisory that they will conduct "Embassy on Wheels" in the Eastern province on 30 July to 1 August 2008. They advised applicants to go on 30 July 2008 at 4 PM to beat the long line which will be expected on regular days the following 2 days.

I arrived at Al Bustan Hotel in Al-Khobar just 10 minutes past 4 and the line was already long. Notwithstanding the heat of the sun outside the hotel, the line went on smoothly. I was able to reach the glass door at about 5 pm. Getting inside the second room was a pandemonium. The room was jampacked. There was no more line. There were about 200 inside the room. Sweats flow all over our bodies. Small children were crying. Everybody was sweating. Somebody were cursing when they reached infront of the line only to be told that the background of their photos was not ROYAL BLUE.

What is royal blue by the way? Is the shade of blue that IMPORTANT in the MRP? Do all photographers in Saudi Arabia or in the world know what the hell is royal blue? Did the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh or in any Philippine Embassy overseas post the color " ROYAL BLUE" in its website?

To top in all, there was only 1 Embassy employee who was making a receipt. Absolutely there was no order whatsoever in that room. Thinking that I won't be served because of the chaos and disorder, I decided to return to Jubail ( a one and half drive) at about 6 PM and vowed to come back the following day.

The business was supposed to start at 8 AM. I arrived at Al Bustan Hotel at 10 before 8 only to be told that the Embassy officials have changed the venue to International Philippine School Al-Khobar (IPSA).

I arrived at IPSA at 8:05 Am only to find out that the Embassy officials have stopped issuing numbers because they could not processed any more passports applications. They only entertained 700 applicants.

I do not know what to say.

4 Jokes for Today

Is it really ice cream that Pacquio (Manny) is endorsing in his TV add for Nestle Ice Cream?
I thought it is softdrinks. Because he said, " Children, Mirinda na?"

Mirinda is a variation of "miryenda" , filipino for snacks.

Daniel Dingel - Genius or Insane

With the unstoppable increase in fuel, many become curious with the water-powered car of Filipino inventor, Daniel Dingel. The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that Daniel Dingel built a water-fueled automobile engine as early as 1969. Dingel has no patents and many members of the science community feel that his water-powered car is a hoax. However, Daniel Dingel has demonstrated his car without any technical papers or explanation as to how it works. And if it does work, a water-powered car would be a fantastic invention.

Daniel Dingel claims his engine has a chamber that breaks apart water molecules to produce combustible hydrogen. Electricity from a 12-volt car battery is used to split the water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen components, with the hydrogen then used to power the car engine.

Dingel already demonstrated his invention on TV and yet even the Philippine government has no support for his genius invention.

NERI is SSS Boss by August 2008

Neri assumes SSS post Aug. 1--Palace

By Lira Dalangin-FernandezINQUIRER.netFirst Posted 12:33:00 07/09/2008

MANILA, Philippines -- Commission on Higher Education chairman Romulo Neri will take over as administrator of the Social Security System starting August 1, Press Secretary Jesus Dureza announced Wednesday.
Neri will replace Corazon de la Paz, who resigned from her post in June, citing "problems."
"Secretary Romulo Neri has been appointed by President [Gloria Macapagal-] Arroyo administrator of the Social Security System. He will assume office August 1 this year," Dureza said in a statement.
In a separate phone interview, Dureza said Neri would also assume as chief executive officer of the state-run pension fund for workers in the private sector.
Neri will also be the cluster head of the newly-launched national social welfare program with a Cabinet rank. The program was created under Administrative Order 232 released Tuesday that would consolidate the social welfare programs of the government.
De la Paz confirmed earlier on Wednesday that she submitted her resignation letter as early as June.
Dureza said the President accepted Dela Paz’s resignation and cited her for the "leadership, reforms, and initiatives she did as SSS chief."
When asked as to who Neri’s replacement would be, Dureza said the President has not decided.

******************************************************

As to the replacement of Corazon dela Paz as SSS chief, like what I said before, appointments in government are pre-arranged with specific tenure.
Because of the ZET Broadband deal, the integrity of Romulo Neri is in doubt. He can still use that so called "executive privilege" in using SSS funds for the next election.
My concern is "HOW IS IT THAT WE LET GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL TO MANAGE PRIVATE FUNDS?"

Neri should manage the GSIS not the SSS. I think it is about time that private person MUST manage private fund. Private employees should have alternative agencies where they can put their retirement fund. Besides, it is their hard-earned money. Let other agencies compete for each other to attract SSS members.
"EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE daw! LETSE!!

2 Jokes for Father

MACHO si FATHER

Miss Venezuela is Miss Universe 2008

The competition is over! Miss Venezuela, Dayana Mendoza, is crowned Miss Universe 2008 at Nha Trang, Vietnam on Monday, 14 July 2008. Other finalists include Miss Colombia (First Runner -up) , Miss Mexico, Miss Dom1nican Republic and Miss Russia.
Miss Thailand is Best in national Costume! Miss El Salvador is Miss Congeniality.
The 15 semi-finalists come from:
1. Venezuela
2. Kosovo
3. Mexico
4. Vietnam
5. South Africa
6. Australia
7. Japan
8. Dominican Republic
9. Italy
10. Colombia
11. Russia
12. Hungary
13. Czech Republic
15. Spain
Only five from above are not on my list which includes Miss Australia, Japan, Russia, Hungary And Czech Republic. As I have said, I chose my bets based only on their initial photographs. 10 out of 15 or 67% is not a bad figure!

PhiSci wiz wins bronze in 20th Asian-Pacific Math OlympiadBy Jun 8, 2008 - 5:28:41 AM
MANILA, June 10 (PNA) -- Filipino prowess in mathematics shone in the recent conclusion of the 20th Asian-Pacific Mathematical Olympiad (APMO) with a student from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) winning bronze in the event.

Tobit James Narciso, a graduate of PSHS-Diliman Campus, won bronze after garnering 9 points in total scores held last March 11 at the Ateneo de Manila University.

A student is awarded a bronze medal once he or she garners more than seven points, a silver medal for scores above 12 points and a gold medal for scores higher than 17 points. Total number of points is 35.

Narciso bested nine other high school students in the Philippines coming from different schools in the country.

The APMO started in 1989 which aims to discover, encourage and challenge mathematically-gifted school students in all Pacific Rim countries. It also intends to foster friendly international relations and cooperation between students and teachers in the Pacific-Rim Region, create an opportunity for the exchange of information on school syllabi and practice throughout the Pacific Region, and encourage and support mathematical involvement with Olympiad type activities, not only in the APMO participating countries, but also in other Pacific-Rim countries.

Participants in the APMO are given a four-hour paper consisting of five questions of varying difficulty and each having a maximum score of 7 points. The contest questions are collected from the contestants at the end of the APMO and are to be kept confidential until the Senior Coordinating Country posts them on the official APMO website. All contestants are not allowed to discuss the problems over the internet until the date that the results are posted.

This year's APMO appeared to be difficult with very low medal turnout: 17 for gold, 12 for silver, and 7 for bronze, with one bronze going to the Philippines. Overall, the Philippines ranked 17th among the 28 participating countries, garnering a total score of 42 and only one bronze medal, besting neighbors Indonesia, Cambodia, and Bangladesh. South Korea topped the list of countries participating in the APMO, followed by Japan, USA, Taiwan and Russia.

Dr. Ester B. Ogena, Director of the Science Education Institute, expressed her praise to Narciso as she challenged other high school students to step up for the country by excelling in mathematics.

"Mathematics need not be a difficult subject given the substantial training and knowledge from grade school to secondary level", she said.

Ogena said excellence in mathematics, as well as in science, should translate into careers in science, technology and engineering that could help catapult the Philippines to becoming a developed country.

"I urge our dear students to put into good use the foundation they get in joining this kind of competition by taking up science-related courses. We need you to help us pursue our development goals through research and development geared towards building our capacity to innovate our industries and improve our economy", she said. (PNA)
