Sen. Lito Lapid's Wife Marissa Arrested for Smuggling $40,000

Senator Lito Lapid and wife, Marissa Tadeo Lapid

Marissa Tadeo Lapid, wife of Philippine Senator Lito Lapid was arrested for smuggling $40,000 after landing at the McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA on Sunady, January 2012.

McCarran International Airport, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

The arrest was in connection with the undeclared $40,000 in her possession during her departure to the Philippines in November 2011. The US Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) found the excess cash in two socks with $10,000 each and $20,000 in a cloth bag. Mrs. Lapid, however, declared only $10,000 in her possession. No arrest was made during that day and she was able to leave the US pending investigation. On January 5, 2012 a warrant of arrest was issued by the US Federal Court leading to the arrest of Sen. Lito Lapid's wife.

It was very clear from the start that Mrs. Marissa Lapid intended to hide the excess cash by putting them in socks and cloth bag. She knows very well US Immigration Law which is also the same law in every country in the world. She is not innocent of this law. Therefore, she deserves the $250,000 fine, confiscation of the $50,000 and a 5-year sentence unless a deal is brokered by the PNoy government. However, this is like "suntok sa buwan" (punch to the moon) since Senator Lito Lapid is a known ally of former President (in Question) Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who is on hospital arrest for various cases.
